The project “Management of hazardous waste produced by households” was successfully completed on April 26th, 2024. The project was implemented by the Department of Environment, whereas Nicosia Development Agency (ANEL) was in charge of the project’s management.

The project’s aim was to promote the diversion of the stream of hazardous waste generated by households from municipal waste to permitted hazardous waste management facilities for appropriate treatment. Through the provision of information, the project’s objective was to increase awareness about the “waste hierarchy”, prevention, re-use and recycling.

The project was actually implemented with the use of four mobile units, which circulated around the municipalities and communities of Cyprus, following a schedule which was announced before-hand. These mobile units were collecting hazardous household waste in cooperation with the local authorities.

ANEL was in charge of the action involving the circulation of mobile units around the different communities and municipalities in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta. More specifically, the mobile units visited 71 communities and 26 municipalities, while 17.000 citizens actually visited the units, in order to be informed about hazardous household waste and place such waste at the unit. During the visits, the public was informed about what is hazardous household waste, why it is a threat to us, the different categories of such waste and how it should be managed by households.

It’s worth mentioning that a number of schools performed planned visits to the mobile units, thus giving us the opportunity to educate the new generation of citizens on the topic. More specifically, more than 7.000 pupils visited the mobile units.

The mobile units managed to collect:

  • 180kg pharmaceutical drugs
  • 85kg inks / toners
  • 203kg paint / adhesives
  • 177kg pesticides and
  • 1008kg electrical and electronic equipment.

Lastly, through our contact with the public at the different communities and municipalities, we managed to adequately inform citizens about what is considered hazardous household waste and how it should be managed for the benefit of our health and the environment. With the completion of the project, citizens can take the hazardous household waste they produce at the designated Green Points.
